I saw Whitey: United States of America V James J Bulger last night. This is Joe Berlinger’s new documentary about a Boston crime lord’s reign of terror in Boston and the alleged corruption in the police force that kept him on the streets. Joe Berlinger is a Sundance elder, having 6 films here over the past 15 years or so. The film was of course sold out (I think everything is sold out).

Unfortunately for me it ran too long and while it is explosive and riveting, I think brevity might have helped. Was thinking about it for NZ audiences and wonder if there is interest in US crime stories. Probably, especially as it has a great doco pedigree.
Kiwi film What We Do in Shadows from Taika Waititi (Boy) and Jemaine Clement screened at midnight on Sun. I didn't see it but heard good stuff. I haven't seen any reviews yet – shows how hard it is to get media cut through with 100+ films here. On the business side for our film The Babadook, the sales agent got a good France and Germany deal and there are others in the works. This is a US-oriented festival - so it’s great to get some big European territories sold.
