The Cannes Film Festival has announced the Jury for the 2014 Festival, lead by New Zealand director Jane Campion. Campion is the first and only female filmmaker to receive the Palme d’Or in Cannes and joining her on the jury are

Carole Bouquet (Actress – France), Sofia Coppola (Director, Screenwriter, Producer – United States), Leila Hatami (Actress – Iran), Jeon Do-yeon (Actress – South Korea), Willem Dafoe (Actor – United States), Gael Garcia Bernal (Actor, Director, Producer – Mexico), Jia Zhangke (Director, Screenwriter, Producer – China) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Director, Screenwriter, Producer – Denmark).

The Festival kicks off in less than two weeks, and it’s the Jury’s job to decide who will win this years coveted Palme d’Or award, chosen from the 18 films screening in competition. The winner will be announced on Saturday 24th May.

In the meantime, on Rialto Channel you can enjoy an eclectic collection of films that have screened at the Cannes Film Festival over the last couple of years. Here are my picks for the week.

Rust and Bone (2012)

Starring: Marion Cotillard & Matthias Schoenaerts
Directed by: Jacques Audiard
Screening: Official Selection, Saturday 10th May, 8.30pm

2013 was a tough year to be an actress seeking an Oscar nomination – competition was fierce. Marion Cotillard received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in director Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone, but missed out on an Oscar nomination. I’ve always felt she was robbed as her performance as a Marine World Orca trainer who looses both her legs in a tragic accident is simply superb.

Director Jacques Audiard has been nominated 3 times for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the runner up award, the Grand Jury Prize in 2009 for A Prophet. He reunited with A Prophet co-writer Thomas Bidegain for Rust and Bone, and once again the two deliver an emotional, intense and highly rewarding film about people and relationships under pressure.

Fast Girls (2012)

Starring: Lenora Crichlow, Philip Davis, Jamie Howard & Rupert Graves
Directed by: Regan Hall
Screening: Rialto British, Monday 5th May, 8.30pm

Fast Girls might be screening in Rialto Channel’s Rialto British season, however at the helm of this film is New Zealand born filmmaker Regan Hall. After studying film and working as an editor in Wellington, Regan Hall moved to London in 2000 where he set up a production company creating films for the advertising, fashion and music industries. In 2010 he won multiple awards for his short film 3 Hours, and Fast Girls is his feature film debut. It tells the feel good story of two competitive female sprinters who race their way into the British 4×100 metres relay team to compete at a World Championship event. Look no further if you’re in the mood for a light, classic underdog sports movie.

The Giants (2011)

Starring: Paul Bartel, Zacharie Chasseriaud & Marthe Keller
Directed by: Bouli Lanners
Screening: Friday Night Films, Friday 9th May, 8.30pm

The Giants is a coming of age story from Belgium comic actor, director and screenwriter Bouli Lanners. It tells the story of two adolescents brothers abandoned by their mother to spend the summer in their late grandfathers shabby cottage in the country where they get up to plenty of youthful misadventures and mischief with a local friend. The pace ebbs and flows, however thanks to fabulous performances from it’s young cast and an unusual mix of gritty realism and fairytale-like, atmospheric visuals, this coming of age story will appeal to those who remember films such as Stand by Me with fondness.
