Now the first polar blast has swept the country you don’t need to feel guilty about moving into hibernation mode, so curl up on the couch and enjoying some of the superb films Rialto Channel is playing this month.

Throughout July there’s a host of music documentaries to savour, including the smash hit Searching for Sugar Man, and an array of feature films filled with humour, drama and action.

One of my picks this week is a brand new television series that has critics raving in the United States. It’s called Rectify and stars Aussie actor Aden Young in the lead role of ex-convict Daniel Holden. Check out my interview with Aden Young later in the week.

Here are my picks for the week.

RECTIFY
Starring: Aden Young & Abigal Spencer
Written and created by: Ray McKinnon
Screening: Wednesday nights at 8.30pm

Rectify is the first Sundance Channel produced television series written and created by Ray McKinnon, an actor and writer known for roles in Sons of Anarchy and Deadwood. The series stars Aden Young as Daniel Holden, released from prison, thanks to new DNA evidence, after 19 years on death row for raping and murdering his girlfriend. Returning to his small Southern hometown, Daniel rediscovers a world far removed from the prison where he spent 23 hours a day in solitude. The series is visually beautiful and cinematic, and riveting television thanks to an all-round brilliant cast and a dark underlying thriller aspect to this story – is Daniel innocent or guilty. The good news is the production is just about to start filming for the second season.

AUTOLUMINESCENT: ROWLAND S. HOWARD
Starring: Rowland S. Howard, Genevieve McGuckin & Nick Cave
Directed by: Richard Lowenstein, Lynn-Maree Milburn
Screening: Thursday 4th July, 8.30pm

Iconic Aussie guitarist Rowland Howard played in bands such as The Young Charletons, The Boys Net Door, The Birthday Party and These Immortal Souls, and passed away in 2009 aged 50. He was described by Nick Cave as Australia’s most unique, gifted and uncompromising guitarist. In this engaging documentary a great collection of articulate, honest and entertaining colleagues and admirers take us through Howard’s career and legacy. The documentary also features interviews with the man himself, which adds another layer to this story of an artist who challenged, rankled, and inspired the Aussie rock scene for decades, and, most importantly, never ‘sold out’.

THE WAY
Starring: Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen & James Nesbitt
Directed by: Emilio Estevez
Screening: Saturday 6th July, 8.30pm

What begins as the heartbreaking story of a father grieving for his only child turns into a heartwarming and uplifting story delivered, thankfully, without sentimentality. The Way is a family affair, written, directed and produced by Emilio Estevez, and starring his father Martin Sheen as Tom. When Tom’s adventurous adult son Daniel (Estevez) dies while walking the historical 800km trek known as The Camino de Santiago (which stretches from St. Jean Pied de Port in France through the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compotela in northwest Spain) Tom decides to walk the track in honor of his son. What follows is a life changing experience for Tom, and a moving and at times amusing experience for us. Those with a fondness for this part of the world will also enjoy the scenery as the entire film was shot on the actual Camino de Santiago.
