Made in America
Starring: Jay Z, Rita Ora, Pearl Jam, Run DMC & Kanye West
Directed by: Ron Howard
Screening: Rialto Documentary, Thursday 9th April, 8.30pm

Made in America is a two-day music festival organized by entrepreneur, record producer and musician Jay Z. The festival takes place in Philadelphia and celebrates the diverse range of musical genres that appeal to today’s youth. In 2012, at very late notice, director and producer Ron Howard jumped on board and agreed to shoot a behind the scenes documentary on this musically and culturally diverse event. It’s a slick, nicely edited doco that focuses too much on Jay Z’s many accomplishments but also provides some stellar moments as Howard interviews musicians far hipper than he is. Music is the winner on the day though, and this documentary really comes to life when the excellent concert footage takes over.

Words and Pictures

Starring: Clive Owen & Juliette Binoche
Directed by: Fred Schepisi
Screening: Rialto Selection, Saturday 11th April, 8.30pm

Words and Pictures is a romantic comedy staring Clive Owen & Juliette Binoche as two teachers that engage their students in a war over what’s more important; words or pictures. Owen and Binoche throw themselves into their characters in this film by veteran Aussie director Fred Schepisi, and yet no matter how hard they try, the never quite convince us of their affection for each other. The humour is dry, and there are some lovely moments as these two infuriate and then fall for each other. As much as Words and Pictures tends to stereotypical characters and conservative direction, Owen and Binoche are still a delight to watch.

A Five Star Life

Starring: Margherita Buy & Fabrizia Sacchi
Directed by: Maria Sole Tognazzi
Screening: Rialto World, Monday 6th April, 8.30pm

Rialto World celebrates the best of Italian cinema throughout April kicking off with this lovely drama by director Maria Sole Tognazzi. Described by The Hollywood Reporter as "part Up In The Air, part Eat Pray Love," A Five Star Life is worth seeing for Margherita Buy’s fabulous performance. The locations aren’t bad either as her character Irene, a career oriented luxury hotel critic, travels the world’s most divine hotels. But before job envy sets, Irene’s job is not all it’s cracked up to be, and a series of events has Irene questioning her priorities in life.
