Richard (Eddie Marsan) is a separated, out-of-luck, thirty-something sales assistant whose weekends are spent charging through the forests of Mercia dressed as a Viking in the company of a bin-man and a second-hand car dealer. His wife Cath (Jessica Hynes) has given up on him ever growing up, his son is getting bullied at school as a direct result of his old man's hobby, and Richard is sharing a bunk bed with his socially inept Trekkie mate Julian (Ewen Bremner), who hasn't quite got round to moving out of his mum's bungalow. For Richard, being a weekend warrior provides a sense of purpose and pride, which is absent from his real life. But when it becomes clear that Cath is seeing her son's hunky PE teacher Gary (Paul Nichols), he figures it's time to put down the Viking drinking horn, cut his hair and attempt to grow up. But being the foot soldier in an Iron-Age army, it transpires, isn't without its benefits when it comes to winning back his one true love and defending her maidenly honour.
