For almost 35 years Zaire 74, a three-day festival featuring some of the era's biggest names in soul, funk and R 'n' B, was a footnote in musical history. The gig is referred to fleetingly in 1996 documentary When We Were Kings, an account of the titanic clash between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, but footage of the concert itself remained unedited and unseen. Soul Power, brilliantly assembled by When We Were Kings editor Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, doesn't just restore that footage. It's a reminder of what a groundbreaking, ass-shaking moment in black music Zaire 74 clearly was.
