Writer/director Mike Figgis ('Timecode', 'Miss Julie') was nominated Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay for this film which earned Nicolas Cage the Oscar for Best Actor and Elisabeth Shue a nomination for Best Actress. Ben Sanderson (Cage) has just been fired from his job as a Hollywood executive due to the fact that he is no longer a functioning alcoholic. Since he lost his wife and child, alcohol has been the mainstay of his life and he wants to keep it that way. Ben sells off all his possessions and heads to Las Vegas to indulge his habit and put an end to his sadness. Falling in love was not part of his plan but when he meets working girl Sera (Shue), she takes him under her wing and he calls her his angel. Ben and Sera reserve judgement on each other and find a temporary refuge from the harsh realities of their lives.
