When straight-laced medical student Peter Hadley flunks a class taught by his rigid father (Peter Bogdanovich), his dream job and career aspirations go up in a puff of smoke. In an attempt to blot out the horror of his day, Peter heads to a jazz club, where he meets the sexy, spontaneous singer, Bogart (Fairuza Balk). After agreeing to go for a drive with his hot new acquaintance, Peter wakes up hours later in Humboldt County. Abandoned by Bogart and wigging out, Peter is forced to bond with her dysfunctional family on their Humboldt County marijuana farm. Stranded miles from civilisation, Peter is left with Bogart's hippy aunt (Frances Conroy) and uncle, her on-off boyfriend, Max, and Max's young daughter, Charity. As the family's laidback boho ways waft around him, Peter finds new respect for their ways, and discovers a buzz you can't get from school.
