Michael Winterbottom ('Welcome to Sarajevo', 'Jude'), directs this drama about three sisters, living in London shot in sumptuous cinemascope using only available light and a small crew to create a vivid and gritty view of fast paced city life. There is wonder in the working class lives of the three sisters. Nadia (McKee) is a cafe waitress and at 27 has decided to give up waiting for the right man by placing an ad in the personals to find him. Debbie (Shirley Henderson) is a single mother who entertains men at her hair salon after hours. Molly (Parker) is expecting her first child but is having difficulties with her partner Eddie (John Simm). Despite their differences the sisters find solace in each other's company, sharing their hopes and dreams while trying to keep up with the rigorous pace of their lives. The performances are outstanding and the screenplay from Lawrence Coriat is filled with humanity and tenderness. Michael Nyman ('The Piano') provides the film with a mesmerising soundtrack. Nominated Best British Film at the British Academy Awards. Won Best British Film and Nominated for the Best British Independent Film Award at the British Independent Film Awards. Nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes Film Festival. Nominated for the Golden Spike Award at the Valladolid International Film Festival.
