BAFTA Film Award Nominee 1967. Once again, as with his feature debut Knife in the Water, Polanski tells the story of a relationship under threat by a dangerous outsider. In this black comedy, wounded thugs Richard and Albert are on the run from the police and take refuge on a deserted island. The only sign of life on the island is an old castle. The men take their chances and demand the inhabitants to give them shelter. George is a wimpering middle-aged Englishman sharing the castle with his beautiful and bored French wife Teresa. As Richard awaits instructions from his gangland boss, he slips into a dangerous round of game playing with his unwilling hosts. But it seems that Richard does not have the upper hand after all.
